Exfoliation or double cleansing?

In summer, skin is more exposed to UV rays and can be more sensitive. Exfoliation must, therefore, be much gentler and less frequent to avoid making the skin more vulnerable to UV rays. To maintain smooth, radiant, well-oxygenated skin during the summer, it’s best to double-cleanse daily rather than exfoliate once a week.

Double cleansing is a skincare method that involves cleansing the face in two stages, usually in the evening, to effectively remove impurities, make-up, sunscreen, sebum, pollution and superficial dead cells.

The concept of double cleansing

This involves combining two different cleansers in the same routine. Each works in synergy to eliminate all impurities and superficial dead cells. The first step involves using a lipophilic product such as a cleansing oil or balm to dissolve oil-based impurities, such as sun creams or powders and make-up. The second step involves using a hydrophilic, water-based cleanser, such as a foam cleanser or cleansing powder, to remove remaining residues, air pollution and superficial dead cells.

Foaming cleansing powders are innovative products that offer a unique approach to double skin cleansing. They come in the form of a dry powder, which is activated on contact with water or a toner to form a soft, light foam. They also feature a very attractive ecological aspect.

Why double cleanse?

  1. Pore-clogging: Sunscreens (creams or powders, especially the water-resistant versions and mineral screens) are pore-clogging, and can cause imperfections if not properly cleansed before going to bed.
  2. Accumulation of impurities: Sunscreen attracts and retains dust, pollution and sebum, especially after a day outdoors.
  3. Regular cleansing is not effective in removing sunscreen creams or powders.
  4. Optimize your night-time skincare routine: Skin regenerates at night. By cleansing properly every evening, the skin is better able to absorb night care products (moisturizers, serums, etc.).

The steps

STEP 1 Make-up remover in milk, balm or oil to dissolve sunscreen and make-up.
STEP 2 Aqueous gel, foam or powder cleanser to remove residues and dead surface cells (double cleansing).
STEP 3 Application of the night care routine.

A few tips

Double cleansing is suitable for sensitive skin, provided you choose gentle products suitable for dry, sensitive skin and moisturize thoroughly afterwards.

Moisturize after double cleansing or exfoliation with a moisturizer suited to your skin type to nourish and soothe the skin. Choose products containing hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, algae, ceramides or nourishing oils.

In summer, avoid granular scrubs (such as those containing coffee, sugar, salt or microbeads), as microbeads can be too aggressive for the skin, especially if you have sensitive or redness-prone skin.

In short, to exfoliate properly during the summer, you need to pay attention to the gentleness of exfoliation, limit the frequency, moisturize your skin, and, above all, protect yourself well from the sun.
